Portfolio Presentations (Your book) and whats expected

    By jbryner | November 21, 2007

I come into contact with students of a local photo program on a regular basis, and with it getting to be time for their quarterly porfolio presentation and graduation I hear a vary common question “What’s the standard type/kind of portfolio I should have”.

Well, as it seems the opinion is that the days of the plastic insert style page is dead, and the days of double sided prints are all the rage. Now I must admit that does sound like a nice way to present your book, hearing this was a little different than my initial perception (and how I present my book).

So I headed off to some of the resources I could find, and thankfully there were quite a few. I asked around and gleaned some information from a local fashion photographer friend, she mentioned that most of the books she sees are still the insert page style, though the double sided idea sounded like it would be a very nice way to present.

Off to the web, and a quick email to pe over at aphotoeditor.com, and a quick response of both and email, and a new article about portfolio presentations. There was a quick write up on what they see, what they like to see, and what really grabs their attention. The comment section got jumping pretty quickly as well. In the article, there was reference to a couple of other articles as well. One at A Visual Society that can be found here, and another at What’s the Jackanory that can be found here.

In short, there still doesn’t seem to be “one perfect way”, though I would say that the general consensus is to make it about the work. Make the book professional, make it nice, and make the work the best it can be.
