    Remember school, and the critique?

    By jbryner | November 7, 2007

Most of us that went to school for photography remember the crit wall. We remember our instructors as being the people that gave us all the input we wanted (and then some). We wanted to learn, and we wanted to get their approval. Some days we got it, other days the prints were tossed across the room.

Now that we are out, and applying our craft for cash, we dont really get that kind of interaction anymore. The client either pays us, or they dont. Some may even say how great you are, and how great the work is, but you never hear from them again.

In reading an article about critiques (both giving them, and receiving them) here, it seems like we are missing something if we don’t have a place to discuss our work. We miss out even more if all we are searching for is affirmation and an ego stroke.

Thankfully, I have maintained a small group of friends that are honest with me, and whose crit’s keep me grounded. We should all find people we respect, and let them help us to become better photographers.
