Model releases on the iPhone / iPad

EasyRelease
Model releases have been a source of concern for me over they years. Did I get one? Where did I file it? can I find it when / if I need it? I have taken to scanning them and filing the PDF in my lightroom library with the job.
This works pretty well, and helps with the filing and availability questions, but it doesn’t really help the “Crap, I don’t have a release handy” feeling when I’m out and about without one in my pocket.
Easy Release for the iphone and ipad (almost) takes care of this one perfectly. An app that allows you to take a quick picture of the subject, have them sign a release, and emails a copy of the release to both you and your model. Pretty cool right? One of the features that brought me to Easy Release, is the ability to include external text, and the room for witness signature (that I assume is an important legal portion fo the release). The witness signature was missing from the other release packages I found.
Now, there is always a tails side to the coin, and though this software is great, it doesn’t allow for custom releases. You can add to them, but the over all release is a boilerplate document. It’s also a $9.99 app. Not much in the grand scheme of apps, but a little high in the iphone / ipad arena.

Something for the film crowd – The Battlefield PInhole Camera
By jbryner | May 23, 2010
Found an interesting design for a pinhole camera this week. It uses 3 rolls of 35mm film concurrently to produce an image that lines up across the rolls (see the image above). I haven’t yet built one, but it certainly looks interesting. The link to the whole story is here

CS5 Feature – or bug? (No color managment not an option in the CS5 print dialog)
By jbryner | May 22, 2010
If you spend any time at all in the colro management realm, you have notcide the changes that have gone on in the Apple world. With Apple changing the way that the OS handles files, and no longer allowing untagged images to pass through (yep, no more untagged images, they all have to have an icc profile). The OS now associates the default system profile as it passes through. Well, this has manifested some oddities as CS4 came out.
Now with CS5, the option for “No color management” isn’t even available. This may or may not affect your workflow, but it is a substantial change that will affect many.
I haven’t yet found a full on fix for it, but Adobe promises a separate app that will allow printing without color management. This should be released at some point in the future, and I’d recommend checking the Adobe site for its release.
More information can be found on the Adobe forums, and in the tech bulletin posted here

Lomography in the digital age – Digital Harinezumi
By jbryner | May 10, 2010

In keeping with the “odd” camera posts, I was out and about and came across this little gem. Apparently you don’t need to shoot film to be a hipster anymore (I know, please don’t flood me with comments). This little gem is available from the Japanese camera maker Superheadz. It’s as close to the “toy” camera as you can get, and not have to smell like chemistry. It’s available in the US at Freestyle, take a look if you’re into that sort of thing.

Something else to play with scale – Smallest pinhole I’ve ever seen
By jbryner | May 7, 2010

Found on a website called gearfuse. It might be the smallest pinhole camera I have ever seen. I figured it fell into line with the last post about scale. For a sample of the images created with it, head over to flickr to see more.

Something that plays with scale
By jbryner | February 3, 2010
Every once and awhile I run accross something that jsut kind of makes you think “wow” This is a combination of things. The photography is good, and the model making is amazing. Makes you feel like it’s a world the size we’re used to.

iPad, or iBad – one photographers view
By jbryner | January 31, 2010
I, like everyone else have been hearing all about Apples new release of the iPad, and I know less than most as I have not been exposed to one in person yet. The feature set is something less than what I had hoped for.
What we do know so far – It’s a mutation of the iPhone OS that will include support for more “computer like” functions at some point. The availability of the camera kit, and the docking station with a keyboard make it closer to what I had hoped, but not quite there.
This machine should fill a serious niche in the educational marketplace. It’s ability to deliver textbooks, and include video will make the standard textbook obsolete (strong prediction eh?). It’s ability to provide web and email access to those like my parents (and grandparents) with little ability for them to cause a complete system meltdown will make it one of those appliance like things that some just wont be able to live without.
My hopes for it were for a more full fetured machine. I was hoping for a variation of the full OS x operating system, with the ability to hang add on hardware on it via USB or blue tooth. External hard drives, DVD, and cameras would have made the device a must have. I could have replaced most of the location functionality of my laptop with this one really slick device. I undertand Apple not wanting to step on their own marketplace, but still, I hoped for a “Small notebook withough a keyboard”. In talking with Evan (From angelaandevan.com), he mentioned one feature that would have been amazing. How about a pen based machine that would also act as a cintiq type device when tethered to your desktop?
I love the design, but for now, for this photographer, I’ll be waiting to find a use that makes this one a “must have”

New hardware – Apple finally makes a mouse worth using
By jbryner | January 25, 2010
Im not an early adopter, heck it took me almost 4 years of shooting to finally move over to the Mac platform (that’s another post altogether) and I have been hanging onto my Logitech revolution for dear life. The USB receiver for the Logitech mouse was a pain, and it seemed like it was always taking up the USB port when I needed another one.
Mac announced the magic mouse, and I thought what I usually think about new tech “That looks cool, but I’ll wait”. I got the chance to play with one at the Apple store, and was sold. I decided to pick one up, and the folks at the Apple store were very polite when they told me they had none in stock.
Long story short, I ended up with one, and now have an extra USB port when I need one, and the best mouse that Apple has come up with yet. Add a small utility to allow for programing the touch functionality, and its in the top 5 mice I have ever used. If you are in the market, go play with one and let me know what you think.
