Every once and awhile I run accross something that jsut kind of makes you think “wow” This is a combination of things. The photography is good, and the model making is amazing. Makes you feel like it’s a world the size we’re used to.

iPad, or iBad – one photographers view

    By jbryner | January 31, 2010

I, like everyone else have been hearing all about Apples new release of the iPad, and I know less than most as I have not been exposed to one in person yet. The feature set is something less than what I had hoped for.

What we do know so far – It’s a mutation of the iPhone OS that will include support for more “computer like” functions at some point. The availability of the camera kit, and the docking station with a keyboard make it closer to what I had hoped, but not quite there.

This machine should fill a serious niche in the educational marketplace. It’s ability to deliver textbooks, and include video will make the standard textbook obsolete (strong prediction eh?). It’s ability to provide web and email access to those like my parents (and grandparents) with little ability for them to cause a complete system meltdown will make it one of those appliance like things that some just wont be able to live without.

My hopes for it were for a more full fetured machine. I was hoping for a variation of the full OS x operating system, with the ability to hang add on hardware on it via USB or blue tooth. External hard drives, DVD, and cameras would have made the device a must have. I could have replaced most of the location functionality of my laptop with this one really slick device. I undertand Apple not wanting to step on their own marketplace, but still, I hoped for a “Small notebook withough a keyboard”.  In talking with Evan (From angelaandevan.com), he mentioned one feature that would have been amazing. How about a pen based machine that would also act as a cintiq type device when tethered to your desktop?

I love the design, but for now, for this photographer, I’ll be waiting to find a use that makes this one a “must have”

New hardware – Apple finally makes a mouse worth using

    By jbryner | January 25, 2010

Im not an early adopter, heck it took me almost 4 years of shooting to finally move over to the Mac platform (that’s another post altogether) and I have been hanging onto my Logitech revolution for dear life. The USB receiver for the Logitech mouse was a pain, and it seemed like it was always taking up the USB port when I needed another one.

Mac announced the magic mouse, and I thought what I usually think about new tech “That looks cool, but I’ll wait”. I got the chance to play with one at the Apple store, and was sold. I decided to pick one up, and the folks at the Apple store were very polite when they told me they had none in stock.

Long story short, I ended up with one, and now have an extra USB port when I need one, and the best mouse that Apple has come up with yet. Add a small utility to allow for programing the touch functionality, and its in the top 5 mice I have ever used. If you are in the market, go play with one and let me know what you think.

Interesting new hardware – Kirilan process

    By jbryner | January 5, 2010

    A sample

    A sample

In bouncing around the net, I came across a Kirilan box on Gizmodo. It creates images on film (or on an optional attachment that will allow transfer to a digital camera). The images created take on an interesting neon like glow.

For more on the Kirilan process take a look over at Wikipedia, and for the device you can find it on Gizmodo, or for sale on the Scientifics website.

    2010, another new starting point.

    By jbryner | January 3, 2010

Another new years has just gone by, and likely the list of “I shoulds” for the upcoming year has already been made, broken, and made again. If you’re anything like me, resolutions have been replaced by a process of adding goals for the year. This list is both personal, and professional for me, though I imagine that everyones list is a little different (as it should be).

One of the things I have added is to be more creatively minded for the year. This was prompted by looking back at what images I ave created over the last year, and evaluating where I’d like to see them go for the future. There are a couple of really useful tools for this excercise if you are an iphone user.

The first one comes from a local photographer here in seattle by the name of Chase Jarvis (a pretty visibly guy these days on the nets). His iphone app “The best Camera” allows you to create, and share with a broad community. Really quite interesting, though I have limited experience with this one. I look forward to exploring this one, and might write more about it in the future.

The 2nd app I found is called “Project 365“, and fits in with the thought of creating “an image a day” as seen in several blogs and postings by other creatives over the last year. I look forward to this one, and seeing how I can develop the habits that looking creatively on a daily basis can effect my imagery. This again may prompt another entry or more, stay tuned.

For those that read this blog, and are working to be creative, try new things. Find ways that inspire you, and work tirelessly at it. Take cue from Chase Jarvis (that guy works harder, and has more fun doing what he does than anyone I can remember).

For everyone, Happy new year, and may the beginning of the year be a beginning to many creative endeavors, and successes..

iphone app of the week – Camera Bag

    By jbryner | December 22, 2009

This weeks app takes the place of all those “hipster” cameras that can be foudn these days at Urban Outfitters. Ok, so I don’t think they’re “hipster” but that might be because I can remember owning some of them as I was growing up. Good lord, the last Holga I bought was $12.00 (check the urban outfitters site, they’re not $12.00 anymore)

This app allows you to apply effects to your images at capture, or from your cameral roll files, and includes several vintage effects including helga (holga), and variations on B&W and infrared, as well as a cross process effect and a faded 70’s style color. It’s worth checking out if you have the time and the inclination.

The app can be found at Nevercenter.com

photography iPhone app of the week – Tilt Shift

    By jbryner | December 15, 2009

Finding apps is getting tougher as there are so many available in the app store these days. Finding those that are worth playing with is even tougher. I have decided to share those that I have found and use on a regular basis.

This weeks app is Tilt Shift by imimux. Tilt shift allows you to take photos (or use photos already in your camera roll) and add a selective focus to them, much like using a standard tilt shift lens on a view camera (for those that actually remember view cameras)

Tis the season – an iphone app for photographers

    By jbryner | December 8, 2009

With all that goes on during the season this time of year, we find little goodies that fill a particular niche. Strobox is one of those little things that might come in handy for those that like to map their lighting setups so they can revisit them later. I can’t take credit for finding it, it came over via the twitter feeds that I follow, and unfortunately when I tried to track it back I couldn’t find the original post. I guess I still have some of the uphill side of the learning curve left on that one. For whoever posted the link initially, thank you, and for those of you that think it may be useful, give it a shot, after all it’s a free app. Click the image to go to the site and get the app.

A milestone reached, the day of expiration – Officially

    By jbryner | October 8, 2009

Well, it’s as official as it gets. In my surfing, and catching up on what’s what around the photoshpere, I came to find an article that shouldn’t have surprised me, but it did.

It seems that it’s official, the last batch of polaroid instant film produced has passed its expiration date. This marks an end to something that is a huge part of my memories of photography. Growing up with Grandma pulling the film from the camera, waiting, and then showing us a picture that showed us in all out muted color glory.

The article can be found here.

    A moment of silence please……

    I wonder what’s next…..
